June 21, 2019 Decision Time for the PFD Dear Neighbors, Last week, the first special legislative session called by Governor Dunleavy ended without a decision on the size of this year’s Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD). The governor called a second special session with the PFD as the only agenda item. I am looking forward to getting to work with my colleagues in the House and Senate to resolve this important matter. Permanent Fund Working Group Created The issues surrounding the Permanent Fund and the PFD have so perplexed lawmakers that the House and Senate both voted to create a new working group to make recommendations about how best to use the earnings of the Permanent Fund. The next meeting of the new Bicameral Permanent Fund Working Group will be held Friday, June 28 at 10:00 a.m. at the Anchorage Legislative Information office. The meeting will be streamed live on the Alaska Legislature’s website. On Wednesday, the working group received a presentation from the Departments of Law and Revenue about the history of the Alaska Permanent Fund and the payment of PFDs. They also received an in-depth examination of Permanent Fund law from the Deputy Director of Legislative Legal Services. I am encouraging the members of the working group to work diligently, but also quickly, in the hope of having some solid recommendations for us to examine when we gather next month for a special session. Shameful Pioneer Home Rate Increase Proposal Friday, June 28 is the deadline to provide public comments on the Dunleavy administration’s proposal to raise the rates by 40 to 140 percent to live in the Pioneer Homes across the state.
