February 14, 2020 Working on a Budget that Fits Alaska’s Needs Happy Valentine’s Day. Remember, everything is better when we choose love over hate. Rep. Tuck celebrating Valentine's Day with a group of children from Juneau. House Votes to Expand Absentee Voting in Alaska On Wednesday, the Alaska House of Representatives passed my bill to add a permanent option to our existing absentee voting system. House Bill 115 will make it more convenient to vote by mail in Alaska. Voting absentee is voting by mail. By simply adding a box to check on the absentee ballot application, Alaskans would be able to vote by mail in all future statewide elections. I’m confident a permanent absentee voting system will result in more Alaskans casting votes in Alaska’s elections. Currently, the Alaska Division of Elections manages a small permanent vote by mail list that is limited to persons with disabilities, those who live in extremely remote locations, and residents of places such as assisted living facilities. Those on the permanent absentee voter list don’t automatically receive an absentee ballot. Instead, they receive an absentee ballot application. HB 115 expands the permanent absentee voter system to all eligible voters and removes the requirement to fill out a yearly absentee ballot application. The new permanent absentee voter system called for in HB 115 would operate under the use it or lose it model. Voters who don’t vote an absentee ballot for four years would be automatically removed from the list. Additionally, voters would be removed from the permanent absentee voter list if their absentee ballot is returned as undeliverable. House Bill 115 passed the Alaska House of Representatives by a vote of 24 – 15. The bill will be sent to the Senate State Affairs Committee for consideration.
