Alaskans spend $1.9 billion each year buying food produced outside the state, and supply disruptions continue to threaten food delivery and spurred the creation of a food security subcommittee of the Alaska House Resource Committee. Rep. Geran Tarr, Rep. DeLena Johnson, Sen. Shelley Hughes, Palmer Mayor Edna DeVries and many agriculture leaders gathered in Palmer this week to brainstorm priorities for what the State of Alaska can do to build a stronger food system and encourage a vibrant entrepreneurial food economy.  Amy Pettit of the Alaska Farmland Trust, Danny Constentein of the Alaska Food Policy Council and Alaska Agriculture Director Arthur Keyes were a few of the many who shared successes on protecting farmland, building advocacy and growing local economies. Congratulations to Jodie Anderson, the new director at the University of Alaska Matanuska Farm & Extension Center! We look forward to a tour very soon!
