Tarr's Times

Save the Date: Constituent Meeting 9/22 12:00-2:15pm at the Mountain View Library!

House Bill 217 Gets Signed Into Law

Rep. Tarr’s House Bill 217 gets signed into law. First bill signing in Mountain View in 16 years!

Last week was very special for me, as progress was made on two issues I’ve been working on for a long time. I spent a whole day at a meeting with leaders from many state agencies discussing how to implement the state’s new trauma informed policy that passed in SB 105. Many thanks to the many groups involved with the Alaska Resilience Initiative for helping to make this lasting and systemic change in state government and delivery of services. We will now be more prevention focused!

It was also a great week because Governor Walker signed my Alaska Grown bill into law! We were joined by our friends from the Division of Agriculture, the Alaska Food Policy Council, Alaska Farm Tours, the Food Bank of Alaska, and students from Mountain View Elementary to celebrate our Alaska Grown fresh food and salmon. This bill helps boost Alaska farm tours while enriching our food to table economy! Arthur Keyes from the Division of Agriculture presented me with a John Deere Tractor thank you for my work on agriculture and local food issues- this is such a meaningful gift! The students who joined us to witness this bill become law got to meet with the Governor, and walked away with fresh vegetables and an official bill-signing pen from the Governor! These students are all signed up to run for student council, so it’ll just be a few years before I hope to attend their bill signings!

The Kenai River Classic

Representative Tarr after catching the biggest fish on Day 2 of the Kenai River Classic!

This year’s Kenai River Classic was a huge success. I was able to go for one day of the three-day fishing tournament that raises funds for fish habitat-restoration, access to projects, fisheries education, and research management for the world-class Kenai River. This event has raised more than $18 million over the last 20 years, and they play an important role with the work they do to save our wild salmon!

Mt. View National Night Out

National Night Out is celebrated annually in Mountain View at the Boys and Girls Club- with food, games, prizes, and fun for the whole family. I love these opportunities for community-building, and want to thank the Anchorage Police Department for being there to celebrate alongside our Mountain View families. APD’s presence at our district events has made a difference by bridging the gap between our officers and neighbors, while getting everyone together in a positive light. We were joined by the Governor, Mayor Berkowitz, Dave Barney, and Mr. C from the Boys and Girls Club to present a citation to our Mountain View Youth of the Year, Simeon Bearden!  Simeon recently graduated from East High School, and is our rising star! We congratulate him for his hard work and dedication to his community. He’s off to great things!

Thread Book Party in the Park!

On August 9th, Thread hosted their 12th Annual Book Party in the Park! I got the chance to read aloud to kids from all over the district. This year’s theme was Dr. Seuss- a wild success, there was live music, tons of snacks, and games. I can’t wait for next year’s celebration!  For more information on this event, or how to be involved next year, please contact Thread at (907) 265-3100.
