Speaker Edgmon’s April 14th Newsletter: Need for Fair and Comprehensive Fiscal Plan Will Push Legislature Beyond 90 Days

As you can imagine, late-session events in Juneau are in full swing, and I’m afraid this week’s newsletter has to be brief. As I noted last week, the magnitude of the work we still need to accomplish this year will keep the Legislature in Juneau beyond the statutory 90-day limit that falls this Sunday. What we hope to achieve this session will create a major turning point in our young state’s history and, hopefully, put us on an upward trajectory for decades to come.

Greetings from Juneau this 77th day of session. Our coalition remains committed to working toward a fiscal solution that is fair and balanced for all Alaskans, is sustainable over time, and addresses the whole deficit. The finance committee put in many hours this week working on HB 115, the State Revenue Restructuring Act. Thank you to everyone who participated in the second round of public testimony. It is clear that many Alaskans have put time and energy into understanding the issues and solutions facing our state. The work continues today and tomorrow as we address technical and policy amendments.

Rep. Westlake’s March 31st Newsletter

Indigenous People’s Day – Previously, HB 78 Indigenous Peoples Day passed out of the House Community & Regional Affairs and then the House floor by a vote of 31-7. The bill was then introduced to the Senate for the first reading and referred to the Community & Regional Affairs and State Affairs committees. HB 78 passed quickly through its first committee of referral in the Senate and was heard and held this week in State Affairs.
