Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the signing of the armistice between the Allied nations and Germany in 1918, marking the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation to change the name to Veterans Day to honor those who served in all American wars.

Late last night, my colleagues and I in the Alaska State House passed SB 54 after 3 days of amendments, 13 hours of public testimony and six days of work in Finance Committee. The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Coghill, now returns to the Alaska State Senate to agree on the changes.

Juneau – The Alaska House of Representatives passed legislation today to honor Hmong and Laotian soldiers who fought as allies to the United States during the Vietnam War. House Bill 125, sponsored by Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage), authorizes a special designation for Hmong and Laotian veterans on state-issued IDs and driver’s licenses.

Juneau – The Alaska House of Representatives today formally passed House Bill 2 to give private businesses in Alaska the ability to offer a hiring preferences for veterans of the armed services and members of the National Guard. The Department of Defense has prioritized the passage of this legislation in all 50 states.

JUNEAU – Earlier today, Rep. Justin Parish (D-Juneau) introduced House Bill 165 to help more veterans qualify for state jobs. The bill allows military work experience and training to be considered when veterans may not meet the published minimum qualifications for a state job.
