Rep. Spohnholz’s Newsletter: Big Things Are Happening!

Throughout the first month of the session we have been holding budget subcommittees which afforded us the opportunity to do high level program overviews. We have been hearing from various departments about what is working, what they can do better, and how we can restructure programs in a way that provides services people are asking for, while making informed choices about the fiscal realities facing the state. These subcommittees are winding down and will soon be releasing their recommendations. Once that happens, we can move forward with educated decision making regarding the state budget. I am resolute in my devotion to passing a sustainable budget with consistent revenue streams that are fair and equitable for all Alaskans.

NEWS: Display of Student Research Highlights the Need to Adequately Fund the University of Alaska System

Anchorage ā€“ Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) is highlighting some of the valuable research being undertaken by students and faculty at the University of Alaska by sponsoring the University of Alaska Anchorage Undergraduate Research and Discovery Symposium today in Anchorage. This comes as the Alaska Legislature is deliberating over the proposed FY 2017 budget, which includes a $50 million cut in funding for the University of Alaska. Such a cut will result in the loss of hundreds of jobs and diminish the ability of the University to conduct needed academic research.
