NEWS: “Laptops For Foster Youth” Drive: Help Bring In A New Year of Success For Alaska’s 3,000+ Foster Youth

Anchorage – Representative Les Gara (D-Anchorage) and Facing Foster Care in Alaska founder Amanda Metivier are launching their holiday drive to bring more laptops to foster youth so they can succeed in school and life. Rep. Gara and Metivier, both former foster youth, founded the Laptops for Foster Youth effort at the suggestion of many youth who faced barriers to success, including the lack of computers and internet access needed for schoolwork.

NEWS: Legislation to Improve Foster Care System and Implement Caseload Standards Passes the Alaska House of Representatives

Juneau – Today, the Alaska House of Representatives passed comprehensive legislation sponsored by Representative Les Gara (D-Anchorage) to improve Alaska’s foster care system. House Bill 151 establishes new training and workload standards for case workers in the Office of Children’s Services. Lower caseload levels are widely recognized to lead to better outcomes for children and families. HB 151 has broad support from children’s advocacy groups and adopts national best practice standards.

NEWS: House Passes Legislation to Honor Hmong and Laotian Veterans

Juneau – The Alaska House of Representatives passed legislation today to honor Hmong and Laotian soldiers who fought as allies to the United States during the Vietnam War. House Bill 125, sponsored by Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage), authorizes a special designation for Hmong and Laotian veterans on state-issued IDs and driver’s licenses.

NEWS: Bill Introduced to Provide More Funds for Public Education

Juneau – Wednesday, the Alaska House of Representatives read across a bill introduced by Rep. Justin Parish (D-Juneau) to restructure the Public School Trust Fund. The restructure is expected to bring in more than $10 million annually for education by combining what are now separate accounts and utilizing a percent of market value (POMV) draw of 4.75 percent of the fund’s value.
