Note from Rep. Gara – September 19th: Rep. Gara, Facing Foster Care Launch Back to School Laptop Drive for Foster Youth

Rep. Les Gara, and Facing Foster Care in Alaska founder Amanda Metivier, are launching a Back To School drive to get more laptops to foster youth so they can succeed in school. Gara and Metivier, both former foster youth, founded the Laptops for Foster Youth effort at the suggestion of many youth, who faced barriers to success, and needed online access to schoolwork.

This week’s edition is focused on our public education system. Our state is struggling with a faltering economy and with social problems such as child-abuse and drug-addiction. I believe prevention is our best option, that begins with a well-funded public education system.

NEWS: Bill Introduced to Provide More Funds for Public Education

Juneau – Wednesday, the Alaska House of Representatives read across a bill introduced by Rep. Justin Parish (D-Juneau) to restructure the Public School Trust Fund. The restructure is expected to bring in more than $10 million annually for education by combining what are now separate accounts and utilizing a percent of market value (POMV) draw of 4.75 percent of the fund’s value.

NEWS: Rep. Wool Opposes Dangerous Budget Cuts to the University of Alaska

Juneau – The Alaska Senate is scheduled to take up the proposed operating budget for Fiscal Year 2018 on Thursday. The budget that passed the Alaska House of Representatives last month maintained the amount of funding for the University of Alaska at $325 million, but the Alaska Senate Majority is considering a $22 million cut that will be taken up on the Senate Floor Thursday.
