I’m thinking of all of our Veterans today, including my brother and Grandfather, who served our country honorably and fought to protect the freedoms we cherish as Americans. This week we also honor our Women Veterans, with their own day on November 9th, as passed by the legislature in 2000. I loved reading this story about honoring our local Women Veteran sheroes at the VA in Anchorage on Alaska Women Veterans Day.

Earlier this month, as Chair of the Departments of Public Safety and Corrections budgets for the House Finance Committee, I held hearings to provide the public and legislators the opportunity to learn more about the impact of budget cuts since 2014 on law enforcement and incarceration. My colleague Rep. Jason Grennalso held hearings on the Public Defenders Agency in the Dept of Administration and the Dept of Law for state prosecutors. Rep. Kawasaki’s Juneau Note: Back in Fairbanks!

It is with tremendous sadness that I write on the traumatic passing of two Alaska State Troopers. Sgt. Scott Johnson and Trooper Gabe Rich were killed last week in the village of Tanana after an altercation that is still under investigation. I knew these honorable men and they exemplified everything it means to be a law enforcement officer and an Alaskan. I am proud of the support shown by our great city to the families and friends of Gabe and Scott. They will be in our hearts and minds for the weeks to come.
