Note from Rep. Gara: Safer Streets, Better Schools

We have all been shaken by a crime spree that has made many people feel unsafe across Anchorage. The same holds true for many communities across Alaska. While police protection is largely a city issue, and I believe the Mayor wants to address the issue, there is a state role for state legislators too. I was not, and am not, happy with legislation passed last year by conservative leaders that massively cut the amount of help communities receive from the state for things like police and firefighters. Public safety isn’t free, and I voted against that legislation, which will cut the help Anchorage receives for these basic services by roughly 67%, or $9 million over two years.

Rep. Kito’s Newsletter: School is Back in Session

Fall is in the air, and school has started for students in northern Southeast Alaska. A very big welcome to the teachers, staff, students, and families that have transitioned back to school! While summer has passed, it is exciting to think about students and teachers getting to know their new classes and gearing up for the year ahead. It is time to enjoy those early morning swim practices, after school activities, and evenings of homework. With school in full swing again, please be aware of changes on the roads: watch for school buses, keep an eye out for speed limits in school zones, buckle up, and put away your cell phones.

Rep. Tarr’s Newsletter: RUSSIAN JACK COMMUNITY PICNIC, SKATE PARK RIBBON-CUTTING & CC MEETINGS

This Sunday, August 28th, I hope to see you at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new skate park located at the Polar Bear Park! In 2012, the Anchorage Park Foundation received a $250,000 State Legislative Grant for the project and began working closely with northeast residents to identify an appropriate site for the new skate park. Construction began this June and concluded at the beginning of August. The new skate park has quickly become the popular new skateboarding hub. I am proud to say that the Russian Jack Community Council was a strong champion for the new skateboarding facility. They are excited that North Russian Jack Springs Park will continue to promote healthy lifestyles and activities, as well as serve as a venue to encourage youth to safely pursue their interests. I hope you can make it, and don’t forget your skateboards!

Rep. Spohnholz’s Newsletter: Special Session Update

On Tuesday, the legislature passed a compromise budget package funded by the Constitutional Budget Reserve as is needed. This budget compromise is far from perfect, as are many compromises, but it allows us to keep Alaska open for business so that the fishing, tourism and business communities can continue to operate during the summer. The budget compromise ensures that we don’t face a crippling government shut down which would further damage the State of Alaska’s credit rating and hurt the thousands of Alaskan state employees and those who count on their essential efforts. In this special session update, I will describe these budgets generally as well as what is next in the special session.
