Bill would establish day to recognize unique role of public gardens in Alaska
JUNEAU – Today, the Alaska House of Representatives moved to establish Alaska Public Gardens Day on the Saturday immediately preceding Memorial Day each year. By passing HB 18, the House recognized the role gardens play in promoting environmental stewardship, the economy, education, plant conservation, recreation and research in Alaska.
House Bill 93 creates a grant program for non-profits who operate school gardens at public schools and have raised operation funding in their communities. It would allow the state to provide an additional ½ of one percent of state aide to a school for the purposes of supporting a non-profit run school garden, farm or greenhouse…
I hear it has been nothing but snow, snow and more snow back home! Students from around the state were here this week to advocate for the University system. I was proud of the students from UAF who I visited with, they were knowledgeable and professional. Go Nanooks!
