Pink salmon fishing is the mainstay of our seine fleet and the effect on families and the economy was devastating. NEWS: Praise for Court Victory Allowing Salmon Habitat Ballot Measure to Go Forward

Anchorage – Earlier today, a Superior Court judge issued a ruling allowing the “Stand for Salmon” ballot measure to move forward through the initiative process. The ruling requires the Alaska Lieutenant Governor to certify the initiative and allows proponents to begin collecting signatures. The purpose of the proposed ballot measure is to update state statutes to protect Alaska’s vital and nearly pristine salmon habitat.

NEWS: Representative Tarr Introduces Legislation to Protect Wild Alaska Salmon

JUNEAU – Today, Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) introduced legislation aimed at protecting wild Alaska salmon and thriving, sustainable fisheries.  House Bill 258 will prohibit the sale of genetically modified fish, dubbed “Frankenfish,” in the state of Alaska.  House Joint Resolution 28 denounces the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s recent approval of AquaBounty’s AquAdvantage genetically engineered salmon.  This is the first time a genetically modified animal has been approved by the FDA for human consumption.

NEWS: Feds Approve “Frankenfish” Despite Widespread Opposition and Unacceptable Risks to Alaska’s Abundant Wild Salmon Resource

ANCHORAGE – Today, the Food and Drug Administration, for the first time ever, approved the human consumption of a genetically modified animal. The FDA approved AquaBounty Technologies application to raise a genetically modified fast growing Atlantic salmon despite widespread concerns about the health risks to humans and negative impacts to wild salmon populations.

NEWS: Lawmakers Write to Oppose Dredging of Prized Salmon Stream

JUNEAU—Today, Representatives Les Gara (D-Anchorage) and Dan Ortiz (I-Ketchikan) called on the State to prevent the destruction of wild salmon spawning and rearing waters on the prized Chuitna River near Tyonek. The Canadian company PacRim Coal proposes to dredge and dewater an 11 mile stretch of the Middle Fork of the Chuitna River. PacRim Coal plans to sell the coal from the Chuitna River streambed to China.
