Juneau – Today, Representative Harriet Drummond (D-Anchorage) introduced legislation to prohibit certain telecommunications and internet service providers from collecting personal information without express written approval from the customer. House Bill 230 will help customers know how their personal data is being used and will give people a chance to opt out of that data collection.

NEWS: Costello, Gara Announce Bi-Partisan Bill to Protect Patient Dignity and Privacy in End of Life Health Care Decisions

Today, Representative Les Gara (D-Anchorage) and Representative Mia Costello (R-Anchorage) announced they will pre-file legislation to protect the privacy and dignity of patients who are non-responsive and on life support. The bill would require the state Department of Health and Social Services to keep a person’s living will or health care directive on file to assist medical providers in locating it.

Gov’t Regs Not the Place to Make Women’s Health Decisions

Today, democratic legislators Representative Geran Tarr, Representative Beth Kerttula, Representative Harriet Drummond and Senator Berta Gardner spoke out against the governor’s bureaucratic intrusion into Alaska women’s personal health decisions. The Parnell administration recently finalized regulations allowing government bureaucrats to determine which circumstances determine whether a woman’s abortion procedure is medically necessary, a determination previously left to health professionals.

NEWS: Rep. Kawasaki Files Bill to Protect Privacy Rights from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Searches

JUNEAU – Representative Scott Kawasaki (D-Fairbanks) filed legislation today to protect Alaskans from private invasion by unmanned aerial vehicles. The legislation (HB 159) would require that a judicial warrant be obtained before using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly referred to as “drones” to gather information similar to warrants obtained currently by law enforcement. It would also make it illegal to operate a drone on the premises of another person without the aforementioned warrant.

Bipartisan bill introduced to protect Alaskans’ privacy from new biometric technology

JUNEAU – Today, Representative Berta Gardner (D-Anchorage) introduced bi-partisan legislation to protect Alaskans’ privacy from the increasing number of organizations collecting, requiring and selling citizens’ fingerprints, retinal or voice patterns, and other biometric information. Republican Representatives Neuman, Dick, Millett and Keller co-sponsored the bill (HB 233) along with Democratic Representatives Kerttula, Gara and Tuck.

I hope you will be able to make it to the Anchorage Caucus meeting tomorrow (Saturday) at 10 am in the Assembly Chambers at the Loussac Library. I will be chairing the meeting, and it will be a great opportunity for you to share your thoughts and concerns with all the legislators from Anchorage area districts. At the last meeting we had a lot of invited testimony, but this meeting will focus on hearing from the public. This will be a great opportunity to make your voice known on local road and school issues, as well as statewide issues like the proposed Susitna/ Watana hydroelectric project or the governor’s oil tax bill.
