Political soundbites that propose easy fixes to Alaska’s massive budget deficit get votes. They’ll also get you one of the worst recessions in Alaska history, and a state where your children can’t find a job. You deserve real information instead of soundbites, so you can tell your legislators the path you prefer. Politicians who seek to get votes while the economy sinks are tempting to listen to, but they are doing you a disservice. We lost 9,000 jobs last year. Letting that continue isn’t a future.

Last month the Anchorage Bucs traveled to Fairbanks to take on the Goldpanners and I was honored to be asked to throw out the first pitch of the game. After an amazing pitch that flew right into the catcher’s glove, I was all but asked to be on the team. I was also delighted to accept an invitation to attend the opening ceremonies of the World Eskimo Indian Olympics, where I was able to be part of such a unique and important event that celebrates Alaskan Native diversity, heritage and culture

The House Democratic and Independent Caucus has a vision for Alaska’s future: well-educated kids; protection of seniors and vulnerable citizens; universal access to affordable health care; and a fairly compensated state workforce to provide the essential services we demand. We’re working to keep Alaska a great place to live, work, and raise kids.

A quick reminder for the Anchorage Caucus this weekend from 1:00-4:00 pm at the Assembly Chambers at Loussac Library. With massive budget cuts this year and the Republicans blocking Medicaid expansion we really need to hear from the public about priorities.

Also, please mark your calendar for our mid-session Constituent Meeting coming up Saturday, March 7th from 1:00 – 3:00 pm at the Mountain View Boys and Girls Club. We’ll have drinks and snacks! This constituent event is a great chance to touch base with Senator Ellis and myself to ask questions, share important issues, etc. We’d love to see you there!

This week’s Tarr’s Times is devoted to last week’s advocacy visit by David Holthouse. I was thrilled to have David as my guest in Juneau for two jam packed days of advocacy on Erin’s Law. This low cost prevention strategy can help us address the epidemic of child sexual abuse in our state. We took advantage of every minute of David’s visit by scheduling many legislative appointments, an educational luncheon, a press availability, and he even was able to testify on the companion version of my bill.
