NEWS: Governor Walker to Sign Legislation Saturday Designating Indigenous Peoples Day in Alaska

Juneau ā€“Ā Representative Dean WestlakeĀ (D-Kiana) will join Alaska Governor Bill Walker for a ceremony Saturday in Utgiagvik to signĀ House Bill 78, which designates the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples Day in Alaska. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Westlake and passed the Alaska State Legislature this year with overwhelming bipartisan support in both the Alaska House of Representatives and the Alaska State Senate.

Indigenous Peopleā€™s Day – Previously, HB 78 Indigenous Peoples Day passed out of the House Community & Regional Affairs and then the House floor by a vote of 31-7. The bill was then introduced to the Senate for the first reading and referred to the Community & Regional Affairs and State Affairs committees. HB 78 passed quickly through its first committee of referral in the Senate and was heard and held this week in State Affairs.
