NEWS: Input Needed on Importance of the Alaska Senior Benefits Program

September 21, 2017

Anchorage – A statewide listening session on the future of the vital Alaska Senior Benefits Program will be held next week to gather input from Alaskan. The program is currently scheduled to sunset in June 2018. The listening session on Thursday, September 28 is sponsored by the House Health and Social Services Subcommittee on the Senior Benefits Program. The Subcommittee, chaired by Representative Ivy Spohnholz (D-Anchorage), will be taking public input on House Bill 236 to extend the program until 2022.

Today, the Governor announced a special session that will begin on October 23rd. It will focus on revenue and criminal justice reform. Though seemingly unrelated, the recent rise of criminal activity in Alaska is a direct consequence of the fiscal crisis.

NEWS: Representative Scott Kawasaki to Host Constituent Town Hall in Fairbanks

Fairbanks – Representative Scott Kawasaki (D-Fairbanks) invites Fairbanks community members and neighbors to a public town hall on Wednesday, September 20, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM in the Auditorium of the Noel Wien Public Library. Among many issues to be discussed include details on the 2017 legislative session, the potential October Special Session, the state’s budget deficit, public safety concerns, construction updates, public education and issues raised by President Donald Trump.

NEWS: Rep. Guttenberg to Unveil Proposal to Bring High-Speed Internet to all of Fairbanks

Fairbanks – Representative David Guttenberg (D-Fairbanks) will unveil a proposal to bring high-speed internet to the entire Fairbanks area during a constituent meeting Thursday evening.

Rep. Wool’s July 28th Newsletter: Legislature Finally Passes Capital Budget

Yesterday, July 27, the Legislature finally passed SB 23, the capital budget, which funds infrastructure projects across the state. I joined the majority of my House colleagues, who voted in favor 27 to 13. The Senate vote was 15-4. I’m glad the Legislature passed this bill before August 1, after which the Governor said projects could be delayed. This capital budget will create some much needed jobs in the Fairbanks area and around the state.

Rep. Kawasaki’s July 18th Newsletter: Oil Taxes, Capital Budget and Great Fairbanks Events

Late last Saturday night, the House and Senate formed a compromise on HB 111 to eliminate cash credits to oil companies. The House passed the bill by a vote of 33-6 and Senate passed it 18-0. After weeks of negotiating, the bill is estimated to save the state about $200 million per year by ending the cash subsidies retroactively to July 1, 2017 over 10 years. With some limitations, companies can instead claim tax deductions when they start producing oil.

On July 15th, near the end of the special session, the Legislature passed a compromise version of the oil and gas tax credits bill (HB111). The bill passed the House 33-6 and the Senate 18-0. After weeks of negotiations, this does represent a genuine compromise.
