Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Last night, Governor Mike Dunleavy issued a veto to Senate Bill 140 (SB140), the comprehensive and bipartisan education bill passed by the Legislature last month. While this action is disappointing and if allowed to stand would be detrimental to Alaska's students, educators, and families, the Legislature still has the opportunity to override this veto.

Press release sent out March 14th by the Alaska House Coalition in response to the governor's veto of SB140.

Senate Bill 140 Veto Override Vote

In response to Governor Dunleavy's veto of SB140, the House and Senate are scheduled to meet in a joint-session on Monday, March 18th at 2:15 pm. During this joint-session, legislators will vote on whether to override the governor's veto or allow it to stand. Unlike vetoes to appropriations, vetoes to legislation only require 2/3rds of the legislature (40 out of 60 members) in order to override. With 56 members voting in support of this legislation just last month, I am hopeful legislators will stand behind this bipartisan compromise bill which passed overwhelmingly and vote to override. The members of our Coalition and I stand ready to override this veto and stand up for Alaska's students, educators, parents, and future.
