Proudly serving Airport Heights, Mountain View, and Russian Jack

March 8, 2023

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

HAPPY MARCH! This past weekend my team and I flew back to Anchorage. We kicked off our visit by purchasing goods to donate to the Blood Bank of Alaska in Airport Heights and the Food Bank of Alaska.

Afterwards, Senator Forrest Dunbar and I visited Mountain View Elementary School, where we honored Coach Wes with a legislative citation, recognizing his work to provide students with winter gear and their own community ice rink. Mountain View is a Title I school where 93% of students experience poverty, and while we toured the school, I was blown away by the campus improvements driven by Principal Dr. Clare Hill, including a prayer room for Muslim students, a family resource center, and more extracurricular programs for kids. Families have gone through so much during the pandemic, and these are the types of changes we need to support our children.

We closed out the weekend with the Anchorage Caucus Town Hall and I am taking to heart the issues community members shared with me personally, and during public testimony. Please know that I fully support an increase to the Base Student Allocation (BSA) and a return to Defined Benefits for all state employees. Across the board, all state agencies are experiencing vacancies, and for the sake of Alaska's future, we must invest in retaining state employees and bolstering our public education.

Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn't mention how fun it was to celebrate the Iditarod commencement. There is nothing better than running into neighbors at the Chester Creek Trail, and honoring this centuries-old tradition!

As always, reach out to my office any time! You can email rep.genevieve.mina@akleg.gov, call (907) 465-3424, or visit Room 420 in the Alaska State Capitol.

All the best,

P.S. I want to hear from you! Please take a survey I've created to better understand your concerns and how I best serve you.

Legislative Update

Here are some highlights from the past couple of weeks:

  • It was an honor to speak at the Filipino Reception last month - the first held in four years by the Filipino Community, Inc. in Juneau.
  • Last week I hosted a Lunch and Learn with SEIU 775, a union that represents caregivers in the Pacific Northwest. Several legislators and department leaders joined and told me and my co-organizer how much they appreciated the opportunity to speak directly with caregivers. Thanks to everyone who made this event possible.
  • I had bill hearings for HB 23, recognizing October as Filipino American History Month, and HJR 4, honoring the Alaska – South Korea relationship. 감사합니다 to Consul Sang for speaking on the importance of the HJR 4, and maraming salamat to Edric Carillo, Dr. Gabriel Garcia, and Dr. EJ David for their heartening words on HB 23.

I know many of you are concerned about threats to LGBTQ+ protections as well as abortion medication restrictions. While I am concerned, too, I am committed to defending LGBTQ+ rights and will continue to be an advocate for expanding reproductive health care. I have co-sponsored anti-discrimination policies including Representative Jennie Armstrong's HB 99 and Representative Sarah Hannan's HB 43. I also proudly co-sponsored Representative Carrick's HB 17 which will expand access to reproductive health care.

Please stay informed and consider writing letters of support for these bills and calling in to bill hearings to give public testimony. If there is one thing I know about my district, it is that we are a strong, accepting, and resilient community, and we do not let fear win.

"Meet Genevieve Mina, Alaska’s second Filipino legislator" (KTOO)

I was fortunate to share my personal story and journey into politics. Rep. Thelma Buchholdt is an incredible inspiration to me and I’m honored to serve in her footsteps. Thank you KTOO and Tasha Elizarde for sharing my story!
