Capital budget, plus Thanks to Officers, Teachers & Moms!

Dear Neighbors,

Day 116 of 121 Constitutional Legislative Days

As the legislative session marches on, here’s a quick update of what’s ahead and a few big thank yous to important leaders in our community.

Capital Budget Passes the Senate, Public Testimony in House Tomorrow (Saturday)

Yesterday, the Alaska State Senate passed next year’s capital budget 13-7. This version of the budget drains $288 million from the Statutory Budget Reserve to pay profiting oil companies during a time of austerity. While infrastructure is crumbling in the state and we are digging out of 3 years of deep, dangerous cuts to education and public safety, this is unacceptable.

My colleagues and I on the House Finance Committee will be taking public testimony on the Capital Budget tomorrow, Saturday, May 13, starting at 1:30pm. You must be signed up to testify by 2:00pm. You can go to your local Legislative Information Office or call 844-586-9085 and ask to be connected to the House Finance Committee.

Thank your local Moms, Teachers and Peace Officers!

While every day we are grateful for our public safety officers, teachers and mothers, it happens to be an important week in commemorating all they do to support our communities and families.

As the school year winds down across the state and many students graduate and move on to the next chapter, this week is National Teacher Appreciation Week. As you attend festivities to celebrate the end of the school year and the start of summer, I encourage you to take a moment to thank teachers for their hard work, long hours and public service to mentor and educate our future leaders.

As a member of the House Finance Committee and Alaska House Majority Coalition, I know more dollars to classrooms help improve outcomes while deep cuts don’t encourage innovation. We must support our teachers who help support our children and community by ensuring reliable resources are available. Be sure to thank your local educators every day!

Monday, May 15, is National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the Memorial Week runs through May 21. Be sure to thank police officers, detectives, troopers, correctional officers and all others who step up to protect the community on a daily basis.

Fairbanks will commemorate fallen officers on Friday, May 19, at 11:00am at the Fairbanks Police Department located at 911 Cushman Street. As we continue to grieve the loss of the late Sgt. Allen Brandt and other officers who lost their lives while on duty, let’s remember those who put themselves at risk on a daily basis and thank them for their service.

And of course, Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 14! Don’t forget to thank all the mothers in your life, whether they’re your grandmothers, mothers, stepmoms, sisters, daughters, or friends and neighbors. If you see my mom Ginny Kawasaki in town, please give her a hug for me!

Please feel free to be in touch anytime. Have a great weekend!
