The House Organizes

Photo Credit: House Press On a 21-18 vote, the House has elected Representative Bryce Edgmon to his second term as Speaker.

I am a member of the multi-partisan Majority, with a seat on the powerful Finance Committee and the Legislative Budget and Audit Committee.

As a member of Finance, I will work very hard to craft a budget that protects all Alaskans, from our youngest   citizens to our seniors—and our economy.

Fiscal Year 2020 Budget

Last week, the Governor rolled out his outrageous budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1. As a new member on the Finance committee, I’ll have a lot of work to do, helping to make that a practical document that keeps Alaska moving forward and keeps our economy strong. The governor is over-reaching dramatically.

We 60 legislators are the appropriators. We ultimately write the budget, and we will not write a budget that cuts $1.6 billion. However, the Governor wields a mighty red pen. With it, he can veto our "add backs."  Our only recourse is to override those vetoes, but overrides are quite rare, because they require a ¾ vote—45 of the 60. That's difficult. Fasten your seat belts, because it’s going to be a rough ride, and Alaska’s operating budget melee probably won't end until May or June.

Just a few of the big-ticket items I will work hard to restore are:

  • $273 million, 24% reduction to the base student allocation
  • $134 million, 41% reduction to the University of Alaska
  • $250 million general fund reduction to Medicaid

Constituent Meetings this Weekend

Please join me and other Anchorage legislators on Saturday, February 23 at the ASD Education Center at 5530 East Northern Lights Boulevard.

Meet your senator and representative, and share your thoughts about the 31st Alaska State Legislature. From 10-11:30 we will provide a legislative update and hear general public comments. Then from 11:30 to 12:30 we will host breakout sessions by senate district.

I will also be at the Anchorage Legislative Information Office on Saturday from 1:30 to 3:00 with Senator Gray-Jackson and Representatives Drummond and Claman for a town hall meeting. That’s at 1500 West Benson, on the southeast corner of Benson and Minnesota, in the Wells Fargo building.
