ANCHORAGE – As Western Alaska faces one of the worst storms the state has seen in decades, the State Legislature stands ready to offer whatever assistance necessary to the people and communities affected.
ANCHORAGE – On Friday, August 5, HB 184, a bill codifying the Alaska Tribal Child Welfare Compact, automatically became State law without the Governor’s signature. The Alaska Tribal Child Welfare Compact began in 2017, under Governor Bill Walker and HSS Commissioner Valerie Nurr’araaluk Davidson, who signed the landmark State-Tribal Compact with 18 Tribal Co-Signers, representing 161 federally-recognized Tribes.

JUNEAU – On a unanimous vote, legislation by Rep. Zulkosky codifying federal recognition of Alaska’s Tribes in State law for the first time passed the Senate this morning.
JUNEAU – The Alaska House helped strengthen public safety in rural Alaska today when it passed legislation that would update the Village Public Safety Officer (VPSO) program. Senate Bill 81, which passed 34-2, implements seven recommendations that the bipartisan and bicameral VPSO Working Group made in their report, which was adopted on January 24, 2020.
JUNEAU – The Co-Chairs of the House Health and Social Services Committee, along with other members of the Alaska House Coalition, urged caution before rubberstamping Governor Dunleavy’s Executive Order 121.
The work of the FY23 budget subcommittees in the House is coming to a close this week. As standing and policy committee work resumes, I look forward to continuing work to improve rural public safety, advance State partnerships with Tribes, and roll up my sleeves to protect culturally-relevant education.
