JENNIE IN JUNEAU 👋
Updates from the 33rd Legislature
Hello neighbors!

It's a sunny day here in Juneau as we kick off our 45th day of session.

There are two major updates I'm excited to share with you:

WE PASSED A HISTORIC EDUCATION BILL 🎓
Last week, we passed SB140 with overwhelming bipartisan support. The bill includes:
A permanent increase of $680 to the BSA.
$500 for K-3 students to fund the READS Act.
A funded position for a charter school coordinator at DEED and a new appeal process for charter schools.
Pupil transportation funding.
Increased funding for correspondence schools.
Provisions that enable eligible schools to apply for federal funding to increase internet speeds at their schools.

While the BSA number falls far short of what schools need, I'm so proud of the progress we've made and feel hopeful that another increase is possible. Last night, the Anchorage School Board approved a budget that provisionally restores 69 teachers whose positions had been slated to be cut, including 18 who work for the IGNITE program. None of this would have happened without the tireless advocacy of teachers, students and neighbors. Your efforts worked, and I'm so grateful to each of you.

PAID FAMILY LEAVE IS HEADED TO HOUSE FINANCE 🕙
HB100, my flagship legislation to bring Paid Family Leave to Alaska, passed out of Labor and Commerce and got its Education Committee referral dropped. Its next stop is House Finance! Thank you to everyone who called in to support. You can read more about the bill in this article here.

We are busy wrapping up finance subcommittee work and preparing for the next phase of budget talks. Please don't forget to complete the 2024 House District 16 budget survey
