Rep. Kreiss-Tomkins prepares legislation to completely divest from Russia

JUNEAU – Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins (D-Sitka), chair of the House State Affairs Committee, is preparing legislation that would completely divest the State of Alaska of all Russian assets. The legislation’s scope would include both the $81 billion Alaska Permanent Fund as well as Alaska’s $34 billion in pension funds.

Rep. Kreiss-Tomkins entertained a motion for the House State Affairs Committee to introduce such legislation a week ago, March 1. Pending receipt of the legislation from the hard-working drafting attorneys at Legislative Legal, the legislation may be introduced as early as Thursday.

“With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, we are witnessing evil in real time,” said Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins. “Divesting the State of Alaska of its Russian assets — which were once worth in the hundreds of millions of dollars — is one small step Alaskans can take to support Ukrainians and their fight for sovereignty, democracy, and freedom.”
