Lawmakers commend new infrastructure at
Nome Airport
Newly constructed ramp will help elders and people with disabilities when using small planes
NOME – Representative Neal Foster and Senator Donny Olson today lauded the partnership that built a new ramp at the Nome Airport that will help elders and people with
disabilities more easily enter and exit small planes. The project was undertaken by Arctic Access in Nome, working with the Statewide Independent Living Council, who received a grant from the Alaska Mental Health Trust.
“Thank
you to the Statewide Independent Living Council and the Alaska Mental Health Trust for providing funding and coordination to create a ramp at the Nome Airport for people with disabilities to use when getting on and off the small planes,” said Representative
Neal Foster. “This project is a perfect example why the State needs to remain committed to Health and Social Services partners like the Independent Living Council and the Trust so funding these type of projects can continue. Many people in Nome and
the Bering Straits region must fly through the Nome airport for medical and personal reasons. This ramp will aid elders, people with disabilities and anyone needing assistance getting on and off planes.”
“As
a former air-taxi operator, I put a lot of elderly and disabled passengers on the airplane, and this is a major improvement for those who need assistance boarding and departing the aircraft,” added Senator Donny
Olson.
