NEWS: Be Safe with Prescription Drugs

Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

Anchorage – Law enforcement agencies, health care providers, and Fred Meyer stores across Alaska are teaming up to collect unused prescription drugs on Saturday as part of the 15th National Drug Take Back Day. Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) is urging Alaskans to prevent the abuse and theft of prescription drugs by properly disposing of them at authorized collection sites.

“The ongoing opioid epidemic is devastating people’s lives and overburdening our hospitals and first responders. Expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs are dangerous and easily abused. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. My hope in helping promote this event is that every Alaskan will take the time to collect and dispose of their unused prescription drugs as part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day,” said Rep. Tarr.

The goal of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the public about the potential for the abuse of unused prescription drugs. The twice-annual event is sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
