Rep. Tarr Becomes First Alaskan to Win a “Women in Politics Making a Difference Award”
Anchorage – Earlier this month, Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) became the first Alaskan honored with a “Women In Politics Making a Difference Award” by the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). Winners were selected for outstanding work in a state legislature by NCSL’s Women’s Legislative Network.
“Every day I go to work with a passion for making a difference in the lives of the people I represent. We have daunting challenges in Alaska. The scourge of domestic violence plagues too many families, and too many of Alaska’s children are abused. We are working to make lasting positive change that will make us all safer. I want to thank NCSL for highlighting the achievements of hard-working women lawmakers. It’s an honor to be one of the four women chosen nationwide this year, and I congratulate the other women leaders recognized alongside me. I believe governments across the country are being improved with more participation from women,” said Rep. Tarr.
Rep. Tarr is one of 19 women serving in the 60-person Alaska State Legislature. That’s the most women lawmakers serving at one time in the history of the Alaska State Legislature. Nationwide, women make up 25.4 percent of all state legislators. Currently, 31 percent of Alaska’s lawmakers are women. Wyoming has the smallest number of women lawmakers at 11 percent, while Arizona has the most women lawmakers at 40 percent.
The National Conference of State Legislatures was created in 1975 to provide tools, information, and resources to help state legislators do their job.
