Alaska House Supports Improved School Safety

uneau – Today, the Alaska House of Representatives passed a resolution highlighting the challenges facing local school districts and the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development in improving school safety. House Resolution 7, by the House Education Committee, puts the Alaska House of Representatives on record as supporting increased safety training for school employees and enhanced coordination between school districts, law enforcement agencies, and first responders to prepare to respond to incidents of violence in Alaska’s schools.

Legislature Unanimously Passes Public Safety Bill to Address Sexual Assault

Juneau – Today, the Alaska Legislature unanimously passed important public safety legislation introduced by Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) that will ensure sexual assault victims have a victim-centered approach to reporting their assault, improve law enforcement handling of sexual assault crimes, and help the legislature address the backlog of untested kits by requiring an annual audit of progress on testing the kits.

Using Data to Help Train Alaskans for the Modern Economy

Juneau – Today, the Alaska Legislature passed a bill to improve the state’s workforce training efforts by using data collected by state entities. House Bill 221 unanimously passed the Alaska State Senate today after passing the Alaska House of Representatives last month with broad bipartisan support. HB 221 allows the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education to create a new education statistics program called the Statewide Longitudinal Data System (SLDS) through partnerships with the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development, the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, and the University of Alaska.
