Debate on the Operating Budget this week reached a new intensity when on Monday an amendment to fund the first full Permanent Fund Dividend in two years passed on the House floor.
I introduced amendment #1 to the operating budget to restore the full Permanent Fund Dividend to all Alaskans – and it passed 21 to 19.
Today, against my objections, my amendment was amended down to a smaller dividend amount. This is very disappointing.
I agree with former Governor Hammond’s arguments.
Working Towards A Budget for a Safer and Stronger Alaska
Rep. Kawasaki working on the House Floor
The budget is currently on hold as the House continues to negotiate for more Republican votes to pass it to the Senate. This budget protects and improves public safety, education, health care and the University, which have already experienced substantial cuts over the last several years. After making additional careful cuts and increasing efficiency, I will support this budget.
I hope every one is enjoying the budding spring weather! Despite the snow in Juneau earlier this week, it is starting to look a little bit like spring. Meanwhile, the legislature is right in the thick of passing an Operating Budget.
