Speaker Supports Increased Training for All Lawmakers and Staff
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 21, 2017
Juneau – Speaker of the House Bryce Edgmon (D-Dillingham) has released the following statement regarding the decision by the Alaska Legislative Council to create a working group to update the Alaska Legislature’s sexual harassment policy.
“We must ensure that everyone carrying on business with the Legislature is treated with professionalism and respect in an environment free of sexual harassment and discrimination. With that in mind, I strongly supported today’s decision by the Legislative Council to create a subcommittee to update and improve the Alaska Legislature’s sexual harassment policy. There is no place at the Legislature for behaviors that threaten anyone’s sense of safety, dignity, and wellbeing,” said Rep. Edgmon.
“The disciplinary consequences for engaging in or condoning sexual harassment must be clear. Likewise, any victim of harassment should be well informed as to their rights and what steps should be taken in the wake of an incident,” said Rep. Edgmon. “Updates to the policy and strengthened training will make it absolutely clear that there is zero tolerance for any level of sexual harassment or discrimination at the Alaska Legislature. I am confident that all members of the House appreciate the importance of this undertaking.”
