NEWS: Representative Tarr Celebrates National Voter Registration Day September 26th

Rep. Geran Tarr

Anchorage Events Join Thousands Across U.S. Registering People to Vote

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 21, 2017

Anchorage – Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) will join 2,000 groups across the country mobilizing to celebrate National Voter Registration Day on September 26, 2017. Voting is a right and a civic duty, but Alaskans can’t vote if they aren’t registered. Representative Tarr will be participating in voter registration efforts in the Mountain View and Airport Heights neighborhoods.

Hundreds of National Voter Registration Day events are being planned across the country, because every year millions of Americans don’t claim their right to vote after moving, changing names, or having never registered to vote and missing the registration deadline. With more than a quarter of Americans not voting at all, National Voter Registration Day is an occasion for community institutions, voters, and election leaders to build a more representative democracy.

“Registering to vote in Alaska is a simple process which only takes a few minutes,” said Rep. Tarr. “The more people we register, and the more people who update their registration info, the more people will vote. Our government is stronger when everyone participates to ensure their voice is heard. Everyone deserves a chance to be involved in the decision-making process.”

Mai Xiong, a local Mountain View resident is excited to help with voter registration efforts. “Voting is one of the most important things a citizen can do. Sometimes it can be hard, especially when English is your second language so that’s why I’m going to be helping in front of the Red Apple Market so I can help include Hmong-Americans in the voting process. It’s important to be represented. We’ll also have help in Spanish as well!”

Volunteers will be encouraging voter registration through one-on-one discussions, social media and traditional media campaign, and expanded voter registration opportunities. Rep. Tarr will assist Mountain View residents during volunteer events at the Red Apple store in Mountain View, and at the Carrs-Safeway at the Northway Mall.
