NEWS: Rep. Tarr to Host 3rd Annual Alaska Food Security Week Across the State with Alaska Grown Theme

Juneau – Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) will host events across the state this week for Alaska’s third annual Food Security Week. This year’s theme is “All About Alaska Grown” and the week will celebrate local food producers and Alaska’s agricultural history. There will also be opportunities to discuss economic opportunities in Alaska’s agriculture industry, and future opportunities for increasing the state’s local food initiatives.

It’s been quite the winter in Anchorage. Please know that I have been in constant contact with the Commissioner of the Department of Transportation to make sure that the state-owned roads in the neighborhood are plowed. I know that there has been a problem, but I was home recently and they looked somewhat better. Looks like the squeaky wheel does get “the grease.”

NEWS: Alaska House Passes Survivors’ Benefits Bill

Juneau – Today, the Alaska House of Representatives unanimously passed House Bill 23, sponsored by Rep. Andy Josephson (D-Anchorage), to extend medical benefits for families of peace officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty. HB 23 would create a special fund under the direction of the Alaska Department of Public Safety to extend health insurance at the same level they were receiving when the peace officer or firefighter was killed.

Greetings from Juneau this 56th day of session. It was a long week for the House Finance Committee, and we are preparing for another long week of floor sessions. In Finance we spent 20 hours considering 330 amendments to the operating budget. Many of the amendments would have taken certain parts of the budget back to FY16 levels without accurately taking into account other changes or reductions the departments already made to other parts of their budget.
