I would like to highlight a strong Alaskan African American who was so far ahead of her time in her accomplishments, former State Senator Bettye Davis. I first met SenatorDavis when I was five years old; she worked with my mother at the Division of Family and Youth Services serving foster children.

NEWS: New Leadership Results in Tangible Cost Savings in the Alaska House of Representatives

Juneau – As lawmakers grapple with how to fill a $3 billion budget gap, the Alaska House Majority Coalition has instituted several cost-saving measures within the Alaska House of Representatives. The largest such measure is to roll-back the level of staff pay that existed under the previous House Majority Caucus. The Legislative Affairs Agency anticipates savings of more than $270,000 compared to last year’s staff compensation.

We gaveled into the 30th Legislature and are off to a busy start. I am looking forward to the opportunities and challenges I will face in my new leadership role as House Rules Chair. Republican, Independent and Democrat legislators joined together to create the new Alaska House Majority Coalition. I am proud to report that this coalition represents all Alaskans, regardless of party affiliation or geographic location.

NEWS: Rep. Gara Wants Fairness for Kenai River Dipnetters

Juneau – For the past three years, Alaskans who rely on dipnetting sockeye salmon from the Kenai River have been blocked from fishing after July 31st, which denies them a fair chance at catching their limit of fish. The sockeye salmon runs have been arriving later in the season, which results in a substantial part of the Kenai River run entering the river after the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has closed the dipnet fishery. At the same time, commercial fishermen have been allowed to take advantage of continued strong returns well into August.
