This session I’m proud to be part of the new Alaska House Majority Coalition that includes Democratic, Republican and Independent legislators. The Majority formed around the consensus that the Legislature must pass a budget plan THIS year. Alaska cannot afford to wait another year. No one knows what form a budget plan will take, but I’ll be working to ensure it is fair and equitable to all Alaskans; and of course keep you informed on developments as the legislative session progresses.

It’s been a whirlwind week getting into the full swing of things. I’ve been meeting with constituents and various organizations from all across the state hearing from people interested in helping to develop responsible, evidence based policy. The budget continues to be the major focus of our non-partisan working coalition in the House. We are committed to having an open conversation between all parties who come to the table with good ideas and good intentions to create a responsible, sustainable budget. We know that’s a tall order, but we are prepared to tackle the budget head on, with all solutions on the table.

The many new committee chairs in the Alaska House Majority Coalition took up their gavels in earnest this week to set forth on the work of the session. As a lot of you probably know, most meetings early in the session feature department and division overviews to help get legislators up to speed on the services and programs state government provides. That was mostly the case this week, although some legislation was heard.

Session kicked off last week and is now in full swing. As we begin hearing legislation, the budget remains front and center. The Governor welcomed us back to Juneau with the State of the State address in which he discussed the need to pass a responsible budget to close the $3 billion dollar deficit. He also addressed the growing opioid epidemic.

EVENT: Rep. Tarr to Discuss Equal Pay for Women in Alaska

Juneau – Sunday will mark the 8th anniversary of the signing of the federal Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to help with the effort to ensure equal pay for women. The act also helps prevent discriminatory practices that prevent women from having the same employment opportunities as men. The Act was the first piece of legislation signed by former President Barack Obama shortly after he took office in 2009.
