And we’re off! The 30th Alaska Legislature began this week and I am honored to be part of the House Majority Coalition, rejoining the House Finance Committee. As a chair of three budget subcommittees (Corrections, Public Safety and Military & Veterans’ Affairs), the budget process is already underway as I host my first hearings on Thursday, January 26. We kicked off the 30th legislative session on Tuesday and I am very excited about the session ahead. I’m optimistic about the great new coalition in the House, made up of Republicans, Independents and Democrats, all committed to taking care of business during the regular 90 day session. The Alaska House Majority Coalition members are committed to passing a responsible, sustainable budget along with a sustainable fiscal plan for funding it.

The first session of the 30th Alaska State Legislature convened on Tuesday, with the House under the leadership of the new Alaska House Majority Coalition. During the opening floor session it was my great honor to be officially elected Speaker of the House. I also take great pride and a profound feeling of responsibility in being the first House Speaker of Alaska Native descent. As I said during our inaugural session, I hope to be the first in a long line of Alaska Native Speakers.
