Governor Walker Had Three Great Candidates to Choose From to Replace the Late Rep. Max Gruenberg

March 8, 2016

Juneau – The Democrats in the Alaska House of Representatives will meet as soon as possible to deliberate on Governor Walker’s choice of Ivy Spohnholz to replace the late Representative Max Gruenberg as the Representative for House District 16.

“We are working right now to schedule a meeting of all the House Democrats to deliberate about making Ivy the newest member of the Alaska State Legislature,” said Alaska Independent Democratic Coalition Leader Rep. Chris Tuck (D-Anchorage).  “The Democratic Party did a great job of finding three exceptionally qualified candidates and we appreciate the Governor’s quick action in making a selection.  I don’t see any holdups in actually seating someone this week to replace Rep. Gruenberg.”

The names of Ivy Spohnholz, Kendra Kloster, and Taylor Brelsford were sent to Governor Walker by the House District 16 Nominating Committee.  Ivy Spohnolz was chosen earlier today by the Governor.  Her appointment is subject to a confirmation vote of all the Democrats in the Alaska House of Representatives.  The vote will happen later today or early tomorrow depending on the schedules of lawmakers.

“It will be impossible to replace Rep. Gruenberg in our caucus, the legislature, and the state, but I was given confidence that we will continue undaunted when I saw the quality of the candidates considered by the party and the Governor,” said Rep. Tuck.

If Ivy Spohnolz is approved, the members of the Alaska Independent Democratic Coalition will introduce her during a press availability scheduled for Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m. in the Capitol Building.
