NEWS: Representative Kawasaki to Honor Foodstock Festival

Rep. Scott Kawasaki

Twentieth Anniversary Celebration Saturday, June 21, 2014

FAIRBANKS – Representative Scott Kawasaki will present a legislative citation commemorating the 20th  Anniversary of the Great Alaska Foodstock Music Festival at 8:30 PM on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the Howling Dog Saloon in Fox.  The Festival occupies one indoor and one outdoor stage June 20-22, and also features a beer garden, dancing, volleyball, horseshoes, and vendors selling arts and crafts and food.

Jay Hill created Foodstock in 1994 to bring music and charity to Fairbanks. The festival’s goal is to help the homeless, hungry, and others in need in Fairbanks and surrounding areas.  Each year, 25-30 musicians and bands donate talent and energy – “We Play For Food” – to raise money and gather food for people of the Tanana Valley.  Since its inception, the festival has donated over 67 tons of food and more than $60,000 to the Fairbanks Community Food Bank and Fairbanks Rescue Mission. The festival supports programs such as hot prepared meals, a warm environment and housing for the homeless, substance abuse counseling for men, women, and children, and support for our military veterans.

Foodstock brings the Interior community together to, in Jay’s words, “have a good time while doing a good thing.”  Sadly, Jay didn’t live to see his festival in its twentieth year; he passed away in 2012.

“Fairbanks is an incredibly giving and supportive community,” Representative Kawasaki said. “Foodstock gives Fairbanksans an opportunity to enjoy some good music while also improving their community.  I am honored to present this legislative citation to Jay’s family in recognition of everything he did to promote this great festival and make Fairbanks a better place to live.”

Admission to the three-day festival is $5.00 or five cans of food.  Donations of money, food, services, gift certificates, or items for the 9:00 PM Saturday auction are welcome.  Call Jay’s sister, Cynthia Hill Reed at 488-6872 or e-mail her at reed.c4@gmail .com to help.

Live music begins Saturday at 4:30 PM and continues until 3:00 AM; Rep. Kawasaki will present the citation Saturday at 8:30 PM.
