NEWS: Representative Scott Kawasaki to Address Juneteenth Celebration

Rep. Scott Kawasaki

June 12, 2014
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Fairbanks – Representative Scott Kawasaki will present a legislative citation Saturday, June 14, 2014, commemorating the Juneteenth Celebration in Alaska. He will join the Fairbanks Chapter of the NAACP during their Juneteenth celebration. The presentation will take place at Allridge Park at 12:00 Noon, upon the conclusion of the Juneteenth parade.

Juneteenth provides a valuable opportunity to teach the people of Fairbanks and Alaska about the challenges the African American community has faced, struggled with, and overcome.  It is a day for people of all races to come together and celebrate African American freedom, culture, and achievements.

“In Alaska, Juneteenth also honors the distinguished role of African Americans in building the Alaska Highway during WWII,” Representative Kawasaki said. “Alaska is an incredibly diverse community that embraces people from all walks of life.”

Juneteenth began today with opening ceremonies at the JP Jones Community Center, and continues Friday with a Senior and Veteran Appreciation Dinner at 6:30 p.m., also at the JP Jones Center.  Saturday’s citation presentation will follow a car show and parade that begin at 10:00 a.m.
