Rep. Kito’s Newsletter: 28th Legislative Session Ends

We have finally finished work in the 28th legislative session after ninety–five days. Our work continued beyond the statutory 90-day limit imposed by the voters in the 2006 election. I am grateful for all of the communication and support I have received from District 32 during my short time in this position. In addition to the Operating and Capital budgets we passed this year, there were several pieces of important legislation that were considered, passed, or left on the table.

The Legislature adjourned today, five days after the 90-day statutory limit. We went into overtime to try and get it right on education. The omnibus education bill passed and I am extremely disappointed that the final bill will result in cuts for the Anchorage School District.

Rep. Tuck’s Community Connection: Extended Session Fails our Kids on Education

Today on the fifth day of a regrettable and unnecessary extended session the Legislature adjourned sine die. Although state law requires the legislature to conclude legislative sessions within 90 days, the Alaska Constitution allows them to extend for up to 120 days. After that, the legislature must go into special session if there are remaining issues that must be resolved.

Rep. Kawasaki’s Juneau Note: Legislature Adjourns After 95 Days

The Twenty-eighth Alaska State Legislature is adjourned and I’m thrilled to be headed back home. It was a whirlwind of a session with lots of incredibly important legislation debated on the floor. Just during the second half of this legislature we worked on an LNG export project, a massive education reform package, an overhaul of the criminal system and found various ways to streamline our state government. I worked tirelessly to ensure Fairbanksans’ needs were heard in Juneau.
