All students deserve the same safety precautions

JUNEAU – Today, the House Community and Regional Affairs Committee moved House Democratic Leader Chris Tuck’s legislation (HB317) to slow traffic and improve students’ safety around all schools in Alaska by requiring school zone markings at all school locations.
“Every student should be able to get to and from school safely, no matter what type of school they attend,” said Tuck (D-Anchorage). “I want to thank the committee and the Department of Transportation for working with us to add school zones so we can slow traffic and bring more attention to the children around all schools, and hopefully prevent tragic accidents.”
Currently, municipalities are not required to create school zones around private, charter, or religious schools. Under the legislation, a municipality would have the discretion to place signs, speed zones, lights or other measures appropriate for the location.
Tuck introduced the legislation in response parents and charter and private schools expressing concern over the speed of traffic around these schools.
The legislation now moves to the House Transportation Committee for consideration.
