Doogan Files Bill to Put $10 billion Into Permanent Fund

It's time to "walk the talk” on fiscal conservatism

JUNEAU – Rep. Mike Doogan (D-Anchorage) filed legislation today to deposit $10 billion in the Alaska Permanent Fund.

"We talk a lot about fiscal conservatism here in the state Capitol," Doogan said. "I thought I'd give my colleagues—and Governor Sean Parnell—a chance to walk their talk."

The $10 billion is in the Constitutional Budget Reserve. Parnell is pushing a bill to give it to the oil industry. He claims that will result in more oil production, but his bill does nothing to guarantee that.

"The way I see it, we can turn over these savings to some of the richest corporations on the planet and get nothing concrete in return," Doogan said. "Or we can protect our savings—and increase the Permanent Fund dividend by about 25 percent.”

"Not a tough choice for me. I'll be interested to hear what all these other 'fiscal conservatives' have to say."

House Bill 194 was referred to the House Finance Committee.
