Statewide Fiscal Survey
In January, the Senate Majority polled Alaskans on a variety of topics relating to Alaska’s budget situation. The results showed Alaskans favor a comprehensive fiscal plan that includes reducing tax credits for the oil and gas industry, a broad-based tax, and continuing to fully fund K12 education.
This session I joined with other legislators in forming a new nonpartisan House Majority Coalition with the specific purpose of saving jobs and protecting our economy. We plan to achieve these goals in three ways:
Together our coalition developed and passed a complete fiscal plan including deep budget cuts, a guaranteed PFD, income tax, full funding for K12 education, and changes to oil company taxes and credits.
Unfortunately, our plan was rejected by the Senate Majority, which favors a Permanent Fund-only plan that is unfair to regular Alaskans and would lead us on the road to economic ruin. The Senate plan would not close the budget gap and would rapidly drain our savings. It would require slashing public education, closing Pioneer homes, and a loss of basic state services including public safety and road maintenance.
Now that the Governor has called the Legislature into special session to keep working towards a complete fiscal plan for Alaska, we would like to again hear from you on the same topics as the original poll.
Please take a moment to complete the survey so we can learn more about how to best represent the wishes of the Alaskan people:
