Testimony on Income Tax Tomorrow
Friday PFD Application Deadline
Alaska is on the brink of economic failure as the budget deficit adds to thousands of job losses already resulting from loss of revenues caused by low oil prices and large cash subsidies to the oil industry. The Alaska House Majority Coalition was formed to save the economy and protect jobs.
Adjusted for inflation and population, our budget has been reduced to pre-pipeline days, and there is nowhere left to cut without eliminating the most basic functions of our state such as public safety, road plowing, and schools.
I voted to cut my own compensation for moving to Juneau to represent you each year by 75 percent and am working on other proposals to bring more austerity to the Legislature as well as the State.
Many options have been introduced as we work to prevent a mass exodus like we saw in the 1980s.
Income Tax Public Testimony Tomorrow
Under the bill being considered, a couple with no children would have the first $28,600 of their income, plus all Permanent Fund Dividends, exempted from taxation. A couple’s Income above $28,600 and up to $100,000 would be taxed at 2.5%.
Please testify if you can, or send me an email to share your thoughts and opinions.
Public Testimony Details
Wednesday, March 29, 2017
1:00 - 4:30 p.m. Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Off Nets
5:30 - 8:00 p.m. All Other LIOs, Off Nets
-Public testimony limited to 2 minutes each.
The teleconferencing system for committee meetings has a limited number of phone lines, and because of this, you are strongly encouraged to testify from your local Legislative Information Office (LIO). If it is not possible for you to testify at an LIO office, please call the Juneau LIO at (907)-465-4648. They can assist you in connecting to a meeting and answer any other questions you may have about the process before, during, and after the day of a meeting.
The above schedule shows testimony times grouped by towns and “Off nets.” The towns are actually LIOs, meaning that everyone present at their LIO will get a chance to speak during their town’s time period. “Off net” refers to someone who could not be present at their LIO and has called in from a private phone line. A private caller, regardless of where they have called from or live, is considered an Off net, and their testimony will be taken at the scheduled Off net time. Off net testimony is usually heard after all those present at the LIOs have spoken.
Rep. Chris Tuck, at far right, serves on the busy House State Affairs Committee which often meets into the night to deal with the heavy workload.
