Happy Thanksgiving!

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I hope you have a relaxing Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends.  This time of year reminds us of all we have to be thankful for and motivates us to give back, share love, and feel grateful. I'm feeling thankful for my life's many blessings and the opportunity I have to serve our community and all of you.

Social Work Legislator of the Year

Last week, I was honored to receive the Social Work Legislator of the Year! The National Association of Social Workers Alaska Chapter invited me to their 2017 Biennial Conference Celebration Luncheon where I was presented with an award for 2017 Alaska Chapter Legislator of the Year. I was honored to receive an award among so many hardworking social workers. I have so much respect for the men and women who dedicate their lives to helping others, even with all of the adversity sometimes faced. They are the real heroes, and all so inspiring! I’m lucky to be able to fight for them and with them, they’re what makes my work meaningful.

#OptOutside this Friday!

This past week had a productive meeting with our Alaska State Parks Director, Ethan Tyler, who recently took over this important division that manages hundreds of thousands of acres of public lands in Alaska. We discussed the unlimited potential our public lands offer and ways we can increase the number of visitors, add new outdoor experiences, and strengthen our outdoor and tourism economy. Ethan reminded me that parking  is free at Alaska State Parks on Black Friday so if you're like me and want to avoid the crowds you can take the time to get out into Chugach State Park or any of your favorite places for skiing, snow-shoeing, hiking or dog walking. Make sure you take photos and tag it on social media with hashtags #OptOutside and #AKStateParks. We have beautiful parks to explore and I hope this holiday weekend gives everyone time to get outside!

Upcoming House Resources Meetings!

You have likely seen the big announcement regarding the AKLNG Project.  There are many details to work out and it's too soon to say there is a deal, but the recent announcement with China gives us a reason to be optimistic. To get more information and to allow for the public to participate the House Resources Committee has scheduled a meeting in Anchorage on Monday, December 4th at 6 pm.
AGDC President Keith Meyer will give more information and details on the recent announcement. Again, the meeting is at 6 pm on Monday, December 4th, at the Anchorage Legislative Information office located at 1500 W. Benson Blvd. 2nd Floor (Wells Fargo building)

An Invitation to a Community Forum on Restorative Justice
An Invitation to a Community Forum on Restorative Justice

Senator Begich and I are very excited to be able to share a unique opportunity to gather together, learn about, and discuss how we can bring Restorative Justice into our communities. Restorative Practices are based on principles and processes that emphasize the importance of trusting relationships as central to building community while repairing/restoring relationships when harm has occurred. Kerri Berkowitz along with other community partners will be joining us on Thursday, November 30th, from 6-8pm at the Mountain View Library for a group discussion on healing, hope, accountability, and what resources we each, individually, bring to the conversation to help make a difference in our community. We hope you can join us for this needed dialogue.
