Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Happy New Year!

The 2nd session of the 30th Alaska Legislature will begin on Tuesday of next week. I’m looking forward to again working hard for the people in my district and all of Alaska to help solve some of our state’s challenges. Please save this website for day to day activities of the legislative session. You can track legislation here.

Free Legal Services on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 15

Mountain View Community Center

315 Price Street

12:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

(and other locations across Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau)

In honor of Martin Luther King Junior, attorneys answer legal questions for free on MLK Day in communities across Alaska.  These clinics are for low income Alaskans with civil legal needs that include family, landlord-tenant, and public benefits issues. This clinic is a public service project of the Alaska Bar Association, Alaska Court System, Alaska Legal Services Corporation, and Alaska Public Media in partnership with local bar associations.

In the eight years the attorneys have been holding these services in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau, they have accomplished so much!

  • $500,000 of donated services
  • 5,610 volunteer hours
  • 3,160 clients served
  • 1230 volunteers

Speaking of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior, I am always heartened to watch his “I Have A Dream” speech. It is so tragic that we continue to lose so many loved ones to violence. It gives me the strength and energy to continue my work to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves, speak out against injustices, and work toward comprehensive criminal justice reform, including principles of restorative justice.

Please enjoy your day off - if you have one - courtesy of our brothers and sisters in unions, and those that fought hard to get a federal holiday to remember Dr. King’s work. We must never forget his teachings of equality.

Anchorage Elections to be All Vote by Mail

The Open House series provides an opportunity for the public to connect and understand Anchorage Municipal Elections and the functions of the Vote by Mail system.

The series will be hosted once monthly until March 2018 at the MOA Election Center, 619 East Ship Creek Avenue, Entrance C, Suite 100, Anchorage, AK 99501, on dates and times as follows:

Art in the Capitol

With session starting back up, and with the bleak winter weather, one thing that keeps us motivated in the Capitol is looking at the art that gets sent in from students all over the state. We have a program that allows our students to send in art they’ve been working on so that we can display it in the halls of the Capitol! We would love to see masterpieces from schools in our district- it’s such a good opportunity to show off and showcase the talent that comes out of the Airport Heights/Mountain View/Russian Jack area and schools. If you’re interested in submitting artwork on behalf of a school in our district, please feel free to contact my office for more information. For examples of some of the art that’s been featured in the Capitol building, please click here.

Also, over the holiday season, I had the opportunity to meet with some of the hardworking educators and principals in our district over the holidays to share homemade treats, all baked with love for the people who show endless compassion and wisdom to our students.
