Replacement Sought for Longtime Legal Services Director
Search Underway for a Non-Partisan Legal Expert to Head Legal Services Division
Anchorage – The Legislative Affairs Agency announced an opening for the non-partisan role of Legal Services Director. Doug Gardner has worked as the Legal Services Director for the past eight legislative sessions, including multiple special sessions. At the most recent Legislative Council Meeting, he announced he would be stepping down from the position.
“The Legal Services Division is non-partisan. Unlike many attorneys, the attorneys in this division are advisors about the laws of Alaska, but are not advocates or policymakers,” said Doug Gardner. “The Legal Services Division has excellent procedures and a long tradition of ensuring that the work produced by the division is superb and nonpartisan.”
A hiring committee has been formed by Jessica Geary, Executive Director of Legislative Affairs, and Rep. David Guttenberg (D-Fairbanks), Chair of the Legislative Council. The committee will screen applicants and conduct interviews in late July.
“Our Legal Services Director plays such an important role in the legislative process. The director has 60 legislators for clients as well as the Alaska Legislature as a whole. They have to divide both their time and resources between the House and the Senate,” said Rep. Guttenberg.
The search for a new Legal Services Director will continue through July 20th. All those meeting the minimum requirements and are interested are encouraged to apply.
“This position is critical to the Legislature. It requires not only experience with the legislative process and parliamentary procedure, but an ability to work in a non-partisan manner as counsel to 60 Legislators. It’s essential that the new director has a strong commitment to public service and the institution of the Alaska Legislature, and will serve with integrity, honesty, and diplomacy,” said Jessica Geary, Executive Director of the Legislative Affairs Agency.
