The Alaska Federation of Natives held its 51st Convention in Anchorage this week, bringing thousands of people together to laugh, learn, and shop for the finest in Alaska Native arts. This year’s theme is “Strength In Unity.” The high point for me was witnessing the signing of a first-ever historic compact between the State and Alaska Tribes to improve the lives of Alaska’s children.

We’ve been talking about neighborhood crime and how to address the crime. I think by now many have heard about Senate Bill 54, a measure that has passed the Senate and now awaits action in the House, which will make some changes to Senate Bill 91, including allowing judges to use jail time in sentencing for first time C-felonies, changes in misdemeanor penalties, and violations of conditions of release. National Voter Registration Day was this past Tuesday, September 26th! For the 3rd year in a row my office participated in this national event by registering voters outside of Red Apple in Mountain View in the afternoon and outside of the Carr’s at the Northway Mall in the evening. We registered 35 neighbors, including excited teens registering for the first time! We also passed out information about the upcoming change to vote by mail for municipal elections (please read below for more information).
