NEWS: Legislation Pre-Filed to Prohibit the Sale of Products in Alaska Made with Certain Harmful Chemicals

Juneau – Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) has pre-filed the “Toxic-Free Firefighters and Children Act” for consideration by the 31st Alaska State Legislature. House Bill 27 would make it illegal to manufacture, sell, or distribute new products in Alaska with certain flame-retardant chemicals. The bill also requires manufacturers to label products made with flame retardant chemicals.

NEWS: Legislation Pre-Filed to Require Mandatory Jail Time for Car Thieves

Anchorage – Today, Representative-elect Zack Fields (D-Anchorage), Rep. Andy Josephson (D-Anchorage), Rep. Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage), and Rep. Gabrielle LeDoux (R-Anchorage) announced they would pre-file legislation for the upcoming 31st Alaska State Legislature to address the significant increase in vehicle theft across Alaska. Last year the rate of vehicle theft spiked by nearly 40 percent compared to 2016. The pre-filed legislation will require mandatory minimum jail time of at least 120 days for vehicle theft, with lengthier sentences for aggravating factors.

NEWS: “Alaska Grown” Bill Signing Wednesday at a Community Farm in Mountain View

Anchorage – Tomorrow, Alaska Governor Bill Walker will sign legislation designed to increase economic opportunities for Alaska farmers and fishermen and to grow Alaska’s farm-to-table economy. House Bill 217, sponsored by Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage), will be signed at noon on September 5 at the nonprofit community garden near the Mountain View Elementary School in Anchorage.

Alaska Law Now Honors Hmong Veterans

Fairbanks – Yesterday, Alaska Governor Bill Walker signed legislation to honor Hmong and Laotian soldiers who fought as allies to the United States during the Vietnam War. Senate Bill 204, sponsored by Senator Dennis Egan (D-Juneau) was amended to include language introduced by Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) to authorize use of the special veteran designation for Hmong and Laotian veterans on state-issued IDs and driver’s licenses.

Governor Walker Signs Bill Supporting Victims of Violent Crimes

Anchorage – Today, Alaska Governor Bill Walker signed legislation sponsored by Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) to improve how law enforcement agencies address and solve sexual assault cases. House Bill 31 requires an annual audit of untested sexual assault kits and implements a victim-centered approach to reporting sexual assault. The bill also requires 12 hours of sexual assault training for new police officers.
