We all know the importance of making our summer days count, and luckily there’s always a lot to do! Below is a small collection of the fun events going on around our community this summer. I hope you have a chance to get out and enjoy them.

ONE-TIME EVENTS

Slam’n Salm’n Derby

Slam’n Salm’n Derby

June 9th – 18th (daily) @ Ship Creek
Grab a rod, pull on hip waders and head to Ship Creek for Anchorage’s only king salmon fishing derby. The competition to land the biggest king salmon in the heart of the city benefits the Downtown Soup Kitchen. Pick up a free derby ticket before wetting a line for the chance to win thousands of dollars in cash and prizes.

Anchorage Mayor’s Marathon & Half Marathon

Saturday, June 17th (times & locations vary)
A summer solstice tradition more than 40 years in the making, the Mayor’s Marathon includes the following events: Midnight Sun Marathon & Relay, Alaska Half Marathon, Buddy Half Marathon, Coastal 5K event and Healthy Future Kids Mile. A great event for runners and spectators alike!

Mountain Bike for Women

Saturday, June 17th, 9:00am @ Kincaid Park
(Bib pick-up & registration June 15th & 16th, 10am – 7pm @ Treck Bicycle Store)
Join the first-ever Mountain Bike for Women to discover Kincaid mountain bike trails, try demo mountain bikes, go on a guided preview of the course, and race time trial style! Three fun events to choose from.

Juneteenth Anchorage Citywide Celebration

Juneteenth Anchorage Citywide Celebration

Saturday, June 17th, 12noon – 7pm @ Fairview Lions Park
(Additional Juneteenth events taking place June 14th – 16th)

Free to attend. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Complete with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings, it is a time for reflection and rejoicing.

Bikes and Boards Summer Safety Fair

Saturday, June 24th, 1 – 3pm @ Spenard Community Recreation Center
FREE event for ages 6-17. Bring your bike, skateboard, or scooter to this fun summer event. This fair will feature safety instruction, obstacle courses, bicycle and skateboard safety inspections and proper helmet fit.

Anchorage July 4th Celebration

Tuesday, July 4th, 8am – 6pm @ Delaney Park Strip 
Free, family friendly event. Anchorage’s Delaney Park Strip is host to the annual Anchorage July 4th Celebration, complete with pancake breakfast, the parade, music, games, reading of the Declaration of Independence, vendors, food and fireworks.
If you’re hungry, grab a bite to eat before the annual fireworks show.

Bark in the Park/Canine Frisbee Championship

Sunday, July 9th, 11am registration / 1pm start @ Delaney Park Strip (10th & L)
Bring the whole family out to see Magnificent Mutts, Leaping Labs, Awesome Aussies perform entertaining vaults, mid-air grabs, spectacular flips and thrilling long distance catches! Watch agility, obedience and protection demonstrations, flyball exhibitions, pet contests and more. All ages welcome.

Anchorage Running Club sponsored run that includes 2.5K (kids) and 5K fun runs along our scenic Kincaid Park trails. Race day registration only; fee applies.

Anchorage Invasive Weed Smackdown

Anchorage Invasive Weed Smackdown

Saturday, July 15th, 10am – 2pm @ Taku Lake Park
The smackdown is a fun, family-friendly event to control invasive plants. This year’s even will be targeting Taku Lake Park’s European bird cherry, an invader which degrades moose and salmon habitat. By removing these invaders, we will allow native plants and healthy habitats to come back along Campbell Creek. Includes prizes and free lunch!

Garden Bike Tour

Saturday, July 22nd, 10am – 1pm @ Spenard Farmers Market
Join Alaska Community Action on Toxic’s organic gardening program, Yarducopia, for a garden bike tour! The tour will visit five gardens in the Spenard neighborhood, starting and ending at the Spenard Farmers Market. Free and open to everyone!

SUP n’ RUN Event

SUP n’ RUN Event

Sunday, July 23rd, 8am arrival, 9am start @ Little Campbell Lake (Kincaid Park)
Check out the 2nd annual SUP n’ RUN event at Kincaid Park, which offers four race options, spaced so you can participate in all of them! All abilities and experience levels encouraged to participate, and equipment rentals are available if arranged in advance. Events include: a 2-mile paddleboard event; a 1 mile paddle followed by a 4-mile trail run; a ½ mile (untimed) costume race; and a ½ mile (untimed) paddle with dogs (all dogs must have a life jacket to participate). Entry fees apply.

Saturday, August 12th, 9am – 12pm @ Jewel Lake Park
Join the Anchorage Park Foundation, the Parks & Rec Department, neighbors, community volunteers, and local contractors for this year’s Fix It at Jewel Lake Park!  From replacing trash cans and play equipment to restoring landscaping and removing graffiti, this is a great opportunity to help revitalize one of our neighborhood parks.

The largest event and main fundraiser of the Anchorage Running Club, the Anchorage RunFest offers a number of events for all ages and abilities, including a Marathon, Half Marathon, 49K, 5K, Kids’ 2K and the Anchorage Mile.

thread’s 11th Annual Book Party in the Park

Thursday, August 10th, 4-7pm @ Mt. View Garden Art Park (3350 Commercial Dr.)

Thanks to the generous donations of community members and businesses, children receive free books at this annual outdoor family event! Children can browse through thousands of books and choose the ones just right for them — from infant to young adult. Also enjoy live music, story time, snacks, crafts, and lots of fun activities together in the park, all for free. Dress for the weather! Parking at Clark Middle School.

Trick or Treat in the Heat

Sunday, September 10th, 5 – 7pm @ Muirwood & West Park Neighborhoods
Bring the kids out for this highly-anticipated neighborhood party and charity fundraiser! This is a great event giving kids the chance to do some trick-or-treating without the snowsuits, with 100% of proceeds going to three charities (Hospice of Anchorage, Make a Wish & Ronald McDonald House).

Looking for a fall run event? Join the Alaska Runners Club for the Sky Harbor 8K, 5K and 2K (kids) runs at our neighborhood Kincaid Park! Race day packet pick-up at 9:35am and warm up exercises for participants begin at 10:25am. Entry fees apply.

Alaska Health Fair will be in our part of town offering free education, preventative testing, health screenings and the most affordable, comprehensive blood tests in Alaska. All are welcome to attend!

Zombie 1/2 Marathon and Kids 2.5k

Saturday, October 14th (times and locations vary – kid’s run at Kincaid Chalet)
Wear your best zombie costume for this late season event on the Coastal and Chester Creek trails. Events include a Half Marathon for both runners & walkers, as well as a 2.5K for kids. A rain or snow or shine event! Entry fee applies.

As always, Kincaid Park is an awesome adventure spot for running, hiking, biking, soccer, swimming, walking dogs, group activities and more!  And don’t forget – Kincaid has an archery range, motocross and disc golf courses to enjoy as well!

For those who’d like a little extra info while in the park, make sure to check out the mobile app!  It doesn’t yet cover the details for all available activities, but offers a handy trail map that doesn’t require a cell signal. Get out and explore, walk a little further, ski a little longer, take that mysterious trail you’ve always wondered about. This app will get you back to your car!

Although we are in the process of getting our very own Jewel Lake Farmers Market started, make sure to enjoy other markets in the meantime! Shopping at local markets is a great way to access fresh, locally-grown, caught and farmed foods, support local businesses and get out and about with friends and family!

Juneteenth Anchorage Citywide Celebration

Spenard Community Rec Center & Skate Park

The Spenard Recreation Center is a nearby community facility with a large gym, weight room, racquetball/walleball courts, dance/martial arts room, commercial kitchen, and meeting rooms. Several classes and programs offered. Some fees apply.

The Spenard Skate Park at the Center is free and open to the public! Features grind boxes with grind rails, a flat kinked grind rail, skate table, jump ramp, 2 quarter pipe, 3-sided pyramid with stairs, mini half pipe combination, and a custom curved grind rail.

Alaska Outdoors Club Hikes

Mondays and Thursdays, 6:30 – 8:00 pm (locations vary, but include Kincaid Park)

This all-volunteer, social hiking club brings people together for easy to moderate hikes. All hikes open to public — free for members and suggested donation of $1.00 per adult for non-members. Some special weekend hikes also provided.
