February is nearly over and the State House has closed out our finance subcommittees that were tasked with taking an in-depth look at every state program. The finance subcommittee process is new this year to help the legislature work through the operating budget in a more thorough and timely manner. Next the finance committee will consider the operating budget (HB 57) with the subcommittee recommendations before it goes to the house floor and then on to the State Senate.

The Legislature has been working hard through the new subcommittee process to conduct a more in-depth review of the Governor’s proposed budget and review all agency projects. Those subcommittees are closing out this week which means that several are holding public testimony sessions. Please check out the list of finance subcommittee public testimony opportunities below and call in through your Legislative Information Office (LIO) if you have recommendations on any of the considered amendments. Your voice is critical to this process.

NEWS: Alaska House Majority Coalition Supports Disaster Declaration for Opioid Epidemic

Juneau – The members of the Alaska House Majority Coalition commend Governor Walker for his decision to sign a disaster declaration for the worsening opioid epidemic in Alaska. The disaster declaration allows a statewide program under the direction of Alaska’s Chief Medical Officer to facilitate the distribution of the life-saving drug naloxone, which is used to revive overdose victims. Earlier today, Governor Walker signed an Administrative Order that sets up an Incident Command System and directs all state departments to apply for federal grants to respond to the opioid epidemic.
